Atlantic College Provides for Training Needs of Carers
A report launched by the Western Development Commission in 2010 highlighted the caring sector as a future growth area for employment on the Western seaboard. According to the Commission ‘the ageing population trends means that caring should be a national priority, and that adequate training and education should be provided’. The urgent need for training for carers, particularly carers of the elderly, made the headlines again recently when the recent episode of Prime Time Investigates highlighted what can go terribly when carers are not properly trained
Atlantic College Galway, which has established a reputation as a top-class provider of courses in the social care area particularly care of the older person, is already responding to this identified need by delivering a course specifically designed for those who work as carers of the elderly. This FETAC Level 5 Care of the Older Person course will be delivered in Atlantic College in Galway city centre, in Tuam and in a number of off-campus locations, starting in January. The course meets the requirements of Standard 24 of HIQA’s National Quality Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People in Ireland which states that ‘All newly recruited care staff and those in post less than one year must commence training to FETAC Level 5 or equivalent within two years of taking up employment’.
The course is competitively priced and there is a discount for the unwaged. In addition, applicants claiming social welfare may be eligible for FAS funding towards the cost of the course.
Atlantic hosts Drop-In Information Sessions, which take place in the College (Fairgreen House top floor, off Eyre Square), every Tuesday evening from 5 to 7pm. All are welcome to come along and see what is on offer.
